Fred Hunger, Sculpter

Hunger has achieved recognition for painting and print making but his true love is sculpture. His work includes small to large sculptures in wood and bronze as well as maquettes (models) and monumental sculptures.

Much of his work has been completed while he was registered as a "senior" student at WSU. He is still attending classes and using the beautiful new facilities in the Kimbal Visual Arts Center where he is producing sculptures prolifically. His acknowledgements included in a retrospective book of his work gives thanks for the WSU Department of Visual Arts and many of the WSU instructors he studied with since 1968.

Hunger PaintingHe began his art career as a two-dimensional artist, achieving great skill in painting and printmaking. His paintings are mostly “hard edge,” and shows his precision and expertise when working with paint

Hunger, 68, spent 40 years working as an engineer in the aerospace industry. During that time he also obtained a BFA from Weber State (then) College in 1977 and an MFA at el Universidad de Guanajuato, Instituto Allende in 1978. He taught as an adjunct at WSU for more than 10 years. In addition to working on campus, he has a large private sculpture studio where he works daily.

In his own words: I have always been an artist; though I have done many things in life, each has contributed to my aesthetic goals. This is most realized in my work at this time of my life, the Autumn time.

Recently, I have been exploring interactive sculptures whereby the viewer can become involved in the placement of the components to vary and accomplish the expression they may desire.

I maintain a working studio in North Ogden, where I work most every day as a full-time sculptor. It provides me with the quiet working environment in which I accomplish my most significant efforts.
