Ogden – Best Value Around

Residents in Ogden pay less in property tax and basic service fees than do residents of other Utah communities according to a study conducted by local Weber State University students in early 2005. Eight cities were selected to represent a variety of cities across northern Utah: Brigham City, Layton, North Ogden, Ogden, Park City, Provo, Salt Lake City, and Sandy. These cities were selected to provide a diverse study, which included metropolitan, suburban, and resort cities. The results of this study showed Ogden as one of the most cost effective communities in Utah.

W.S.U. students, Spencer Parker and Austin Green, compared the cost of municipal services offered by each city and property tax rates for an average home and found residents in Provo, Brigham City, and Ogden paid approximately $104, $105, and $111 respectively. The next lowest city, Layton, was almost $20 more. However, Ogden also provides services that Brigham City and Provo do not. Among these services are two free dump passes valued at $13 and a free green-waste site.

All three cities provide some assistance for bulk cleanup. Brigham City provides an extra pick up of garbage cans, while Ogden offers a year-round clean-up program called Dial-a-Dumpster. This program will allow residents to have a dumpster delivered to their neighborhood at no charge anytime throughout the year.

As an incentive to recycle, Ogden’s basic garbage fee includes recycling can pickup. Provo City charges another $5 for this service, while Brigham City does not offer curbside recycling.

The study examined property tax, water, sewer, storm water, and garbage collection per single residential housing unit. According to the Standard Examiner (May 5, 2004), an average household used 10,000 gallons of water per month. This figure was used to determine the cost of water service. The property tax was calculated by applying the tax rates, provided by the Utah Tax Payers Association, to the median house value, obtained from the United States Census. Each city’s rates were determined from the city’s webpage or by contacting the city by phone.

“We work hard to provide cost effective public services,” said Mayor Matthew Godfrey. “We are gratified to see these results and are committed to making more improvements still.”
